Nothing Comes for Free

Sitting on a park bench, surrounded by skyscrapers, i wondered, how can a scanner not scan a bond paper folded in the middle?

i went to an internet cafe to have some papers scanned. Unfortunately, they dont have a flatbed scanner. Back inside my bag, sketchpad. Then ok, i brought out two pages of short bond paper folded in half. They were pages from a Fanzine. One of my interview when i was 16, one was an illo.

But the “technician”, after making 3 attempts almost wripped one page apart.
”What happened?” i asked, while unfolding the creases.

  ”the paper jammed.”

”Can i see your scanner please,” i asked.

”Sorry, but its under the table”

And i noticed the table was actually a shelf used as a divider from the cashier/comp admin to the next computer.

”Im sorry ma’m, but we cant scan these.”

Almost hysterical, i whispered “What?! Why?”

”Our scanner cannot do it. And your paper will only be torn apart.

This is impossible! So i insisted to see their scanner, maybe i can help. But with all the zooming and the sonic booms and blasts from the pcs of 1,2..3.. 12 people playing online games, and 1 listening to an mp3 (all without headphones), the “technician” who seemed irritated long before i showed up, asked me to just leave and ask the other cafe across the street.

”Well, they are still closed;” i replied.

But without further queries and avoiding his cold bloody stare and too much caffeinated shaking hands, i just went out and said thank you in a sarcastic tone.

Outside the shop i gazed at the sign on the glass door. “FREE SCANNING for internet users” Ohh… no wonder. (others would rate it at 15-20 pesos per scan)

Moral of the story:
(1) dont wake up too early. all the good shops open after lunch.
(2) best time to learn mental telepathy is before going to an internet cafe.
(3) make sure to enroll in a computer school where it teaches how to unfold a folded paper. duh
